  • Spinach (Palak): 1 bundle (2 cups chopped)
  • Toor dal (yellow Pigeon peas): 1/2 cup
  • Onion: 2 medium
  • Tomato: 2 medium
  • Garlic: 3-4 pods
  • Cumin seeds:1/4 tsp
  • Dried chilly: 1
  • Green chilly: 1-2
  • Pepper powder (optional): a pinch
  • Garam masala: a pinch
  • Asafoetida (Hing): a pinch
  • Turmeric powder: 1/4 tsp
  • Salt
  • Curry leaves
  • Mustard seeds
  • Oil
Cuisine: Cooking time: 30-35 mins Serving: 3-4 people

Initial Preparations:

  • Clean and pressure cook toor dal with a little salt and required amount of water until 2-3 whistles and keep it aside.
  • Wash, clean and chop spinach into medium size flakes.
  • Cut onion, garlic and tomato into medium square pieces.

  1. Heat oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds.
  2. Add cumin seeds, dried chilly, garlic and chopped onion, saute well until it is transparent.
  3. Add green chilly, turmeric powder, chilly powder, salt, asafoetida and curry leaves and mix well.
  4. Add chopped tomatoes, along with a little water and cover it for 3-4 minutes to cook well.
  5. Add spinach and saute well for 3-4 minutes.
  6. Mix well by adding the cooked dal and add garam masala.
  7. Add more salt and curry leaves if necessary before switch off the flame.

Enjoy it with warm rice or chappathy !!!


  • You may use coriander leaves for garnishing.
  • Adding butter along with spinach makes it taste better.
