Ingredients
  • Big Sardines / Mathy - 1/2 Kg.
  • Tamarind - lime size
  • Curry leaves
  • Salt as required
  • Coconut oil
For grinding
  • Grated coconut - 3/4 cup
  • Dried red chilly - 5 nos.
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Coriander powder - 1.5 tsp
  • Shallots - 8 nos.
  • Fenugreek seeds - 1/8 tsp
  • Black peppercorns - 3/4 tsp
  • Curry leaves

Initial preparations

  • Clean and cut the fish in to medium pieces.
  • Chop shallots into fine pieces.
  • Dissolve tamarind in 1/2 cup of water.
  • Heat coconut oil in a pan under low heat.
  • Add fenugreek seeds, pepper corn, dried red chillies, curry leaves and shallots, fry until the onion turns slightly brown.
  • Add grated coconut, coriander powder, turmeric powder and roast it under low flame, until the coconut turns brown. Be patient it may take few minutes 🙂
  • Once it is done let it cool down, and transfer to a mixer with enough water to form smooth paste.

Steps:

  1. Pour the prepared masala in to a pan under low flame, add the tamarind juice along with enough water.
  2. Once it started boiling add enough salt and mix well.
  3. Add the cleaned fish pieces.
  4. Bring it to boil under low flame, cover it and cook until the fish is done.
  5. Pour little coconut oil and curry leaves on top.
  6. Remove from heat.

This goes well with rice, chappaty or bread.
