  • Chicken: 500g
  • Onion: 2 medium
  • Ginger: 1/2 tsp
  • Garlic: 2-3 pods
  • Tomato: 1 small
  • Green chilly: 1-2
  • Cloves(Grambu): 1
  • Bay leaves(Karuga ela): 1
  • Cinnamon(Karugapatta): 1
  • Cardamom(Elakka): 1
  • Fennel seeds (Perum Jeerakam): 3-4 pieces
  • Pepper corns: 4-5
  • Turmeric powder: 1/2 tsp
  • Pepper powder: 3/4 - 1 tsp
  • Lemon juice: 1/4 tsp (optional)
  • Curry leaves
  • Salt
  • Oil, preferably coconut oil
Cuisine: Cooking time: 25-30 mins Serving: 3-4 people

Initial Preparations:

  • Clean and cut chicken into medium size pieces.
  • Slice onion, tomato and green chilly.
  • Crush the ginger and garlic.
  • Marinate chicken with a little salt, 1/2 tsp pepper and turmeric powder for 10-15  minutes.



  1. Heat oil in a pan, add  the spices – Cloves, Bay leaves, Cinnamon, CardamomFennel seeds and saute well for 1-2 minutes until it is slightly roast.
  2. Add chopped onion and when it is light brown, add green chilly, crushed ginger garlic and mix them well.
  3. Add chopped tomato along with very little water.
  4. Add remaining turmeric powder, pepper powder and enough salt.
  5. Add marinated chicken pieces along with curry leaves and mix well.
  6. Add a very little water, cover it and cook it.
  7. When it is cooked, remove the lid and saute well to get rid of the water content.
  8. Remove it from flame and serve hot.


  • Add lemon juice, if the tomato is not sour enough.
  • If the spices are not available separately, you could replace them with garam masala powder. Add the garam masala powder along with chicken while cooking (4th step).
