Ingredients
  • Sambar Parippu (Toor dal/ Red gram): 1 cup
  • Vegetables
    • Potato: 1
    • Carrot: 2
    • Drumstick (Muringakka): 2
    • Tomato: 1 (Big)
    • Snake Guard: 1 foot length
    • Ladies Finger: 3-4
    • Raw Plantains (Pacha Kai): 1
    • Elephant Yam (Chena): one half (small)
    • Cucumber (Vellarikka): one half (small)
  • Turmeric Powder: 1/2 tsp
  • Onion/ shallots: 1/2 cup
  • Sambar powder: 2-3 Tbsp (depending on the type of mix)
  • Green chilly: 2-3
  • Dried Chilly: 1 or 2
  • Tamarind(optional): 1 small cube
  • Asefetoida: 1/4 tsp
  • Curry leaves
  • Salt: to taste
  • Mustard seeds
  • Oil
Cuisine: Cooking time: 25-30 mins Serving: 4-5 people

Initial Preparations:

  • Wash the dal and keep aside
  • Clean and chop all the vegetables and onion

Steps:

  1. Cook the dal with turmeric powder, onion, green chilly, salt and enough water in low flame.
  2. When it is half cooked, add the chopped vegetables except tomato and ladies finger and cook it in a closed pressure cooker until 1-2 whistles.
  3. Heat oil in a pan, crackle mustard seeds along with shallots.
  4. Add curry leaves and dried chilly.
  5. Add tomato and saute well till it get mixed well.
  6. Add ladies finger, saute well
  7. Once it is cooked, add sambar powder, asefetoida powder and tamarind(if the tomato not provides enough sour) in a low flame.
  8. If needed, add more water, but not too much.
  9. Add salt, curry leaves if required. Remove from flame.

Enjoy it with dosa, idly and rice.

Tips:

  • You may replace instant sambar powder with red chilly powder, coriander powder and fenugreek powder.
  • Add coriander leaves, if necessary.
